Between the 4th March and the 1st June 1941 the British Mediterranean Fleet, under its Commander-in Chief, Admiral Cunningham, transported an army of 58000 men to Greece to fight the German invaders, evacuated 50000 of them under constant air attack, and then in a further evacuation, rescued many thousands of men from Crete, in the face of overwhelming German air superiority. The two evacuations were a mammoth task, carried out at a critical period in the war, when loss of control of the sea in the eastern Mediterranean might well have been fatal.

This book has been welcomed by naval historians as the first detailed and authoritative record of a highly complex, prolonged and confused action. It is also a fine account of an epic of endurance; ships of the Mediterranean Fleet endured constant bombing and dive-bombing for hours and days on end and were at sea for weeks without respite, faced with a relentless enemy and with virtually no opportunity of striking back.
